The pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the energy crisis – these are just some of the reasons why people today have a shaky sense of security. In view of the unpredictable changes we face, what we really need is stability in the basic needs sector. According to WHO, we spend an average of 90% of our lives in enclosed spaces, so achieving high functionality for our buildings is a priority. How can we achieve this goal? Through adaptive architecture.
Architecture that keeps up with the changes
Adaptive architecture is an approach that involves adapting the space to the user’s requirements, climate change and government guidelines. This is nothing new – a medieval example of flexible architecture was the drawbridge, which protected the entrance to a castle in times of war, whereas in times of peace it enabled the flow of people and the development of trade. Let’s look for further examples – Native American tepees that opened at the top and sides, Bedouin tents and traditional Japanese houses – they changed depending on the times of day and night. It means that the concept of adaptive architecture has remained the same for generations, but the extent of architectural modifications has changed over the centuries, with many valuable technological solutions being created.
Thanks to Venetian blinds and active facades, it is possible to separate the functioning of the facade from the layers of the structure. In the beginning, the aim was mainly to regulate the flow of light into the building, but this is not the only use of blinds. Their functionality was extended at the end of the 20th century, when architects started to harness the energy from the surroundings of the property and direct it to where it was needed the most. As a result, electronic systems that control the shading and ventilation inside building facades have been introduced to the market. There have also emerged more advanced kinetic systems and greater opportunities to optimise energy expenditure.
To sum up, the contemporary long-term adaptation of the building includes environmentally friendly materials, renewable energy sources, Smart Home solutions, adjustment of the facade thanks to windows and shutters, and the ability to rotate the property or its parts, so that all the heat energy goes into the building. It should be emphasised that a flexible approach to architecture applies not only to new buildings, but also to older and sometimes neglected ones. It is through adaptive solutions that they can be given a new lease of life.

New dimension of interiors with Aluprof products
Architectural adaptations have become even more important in recent years. This is partly driven by the growing popularity of hybrid work, an interest in subletting unused office space, as well as a greater correlation between the quality of the working environment and the values, needs and professional achievements of employees. The better we design the space, the greater the company’s capacity and the higher the sense of security when it comes to readiness for potential changes. This is confirmed by the Activity Based Working trend, according to which an office is not just about individual workstations, it should also have zones for specific tasks. However, let’s not ever forget that design trends are a suggestion, the customer’s needs are still key.
Partition walls with the MB-EXPO system are excellent for dividing rooms in commercial buildings. This allows us to create fixed walls, all-glass hinged and swinging-type doors and segments of accordion and folding doors. There are multiple possible uses – from separating several offices for working or showing products, creating a separate conference room or an impressive inner courtyard or garden, and designing relaxation rooms and telephone booths. What is more, the aluminium surfaces of partition walls can be colourful, have an interesting texture, a company logo or an original pattern – all of which can add character to a given space.

Let’s build a better future!
‘In the context of intensive urbanisation, climate policy requirements and crises that destabilise our daily life – whether it involves energy, financial or economic crises – then adaptive architecture should be seen as a huge opportunity. By opting for flexible building solutions, we can stay on top of these variables, indeed one step ahead. The diversity of Aluprof aluminium frames makes it possible to adapt a building to its surroundings and the users’ expectations. The aesthetic appeal, technical qualities, durability, lightness and recyclability make aluminium a material of our times, allowing us to make energy-efficient, stable and safe structures, even under the most demanding conditions,’ says Michiel van Duren, Managing Director of Aluprof Nederland BV.
